5 Common Summer Roof Issues and When to Call a Professional Roofer to Fix Them

Each season brings a set of challenges for homeowners to
contend with, and summer is no exception. Heat storms along with other hazards
that are specific to this season can wreak considerable havoc. Here are five common
summer roof problems that can occur along with advice on when you must contact
a professional roofer for help.

1. Sun Damage

If the sun is intensely beating down on a roof, this can
cause considerable damage to occur. Roofing materials can crack, become brittle
or fade, and this is especially the case for those that are nearing the end of
their lifespans. This damage can compromise your roof and make it less able to
protect your home from the elements. If you notice any shingles are cracked,
curling, fading or crumbling, call a professional roofer to come and make an
assessment. The roofer will determine whether you need repairs or a roof
replacement.

2. Thermal Shock

Summer is well known for significant temperature
fluctuations. Temperatures can become considerably hot during the day and drop around
nightfall. This phenomenon is known as thermal shock, and it can cause roofing
materials to expand and contract. When this happens enough, it can undermine
the structural integrity of your roof. If you start to see that your roof is
warping or parts of it are shifting out of place, you must call a licensed
roofer for help straight away. Ignoring this problem can be detrimental.

3. Moss and Algae Growth

Frequent rainfall and summer humidity provide a perfect
breeding ground for moss and algae to grow on the surfaces of roofs, especially
if there is any degree of standing water present. This plant matter will trap
moisture, and this will eventually cause roofing materials to deteriorate. If
you see any green streaks or patches on your roof, you should contact a
professional roofer to clean your roof and apply preventative treatments.

4. Storm Damage

Summer storms can also cause considerable damage. These
storms can bring heavy rains, high winds and hail that can cause shingles to
crack or come off completely. In worst case scenarios, trees can be knocked
into your home and hit your roof. After a major storm, call a licensed roofer
to inspect your roof for damages.

5. Clogged Gutters

Gutters play an integral role in protecting your roof as well
as your home foundation. This is because they channel water away from your
home. Summer storms can cause gutters to become clogged with leaves, debris and
twigs. If water is overflowing, call a roofer to clean your gutters so that
they do not become damaged.

If you notice any signs of trouble at all, do not ignore them.
Call for help so minor issues do not become monumental disasters.
